CHANGING LIFESTYLES
First, let’s consider how people’s lives have changed in
recent years. GDP, inflation and other key economic
indicators have been on a rollercoaster since 2020.5 Global
shocks such as the pandemic and wars in Ukraine and
Palestine, as well as political turbulence closer to home,
have shaken consumer confidence, which hit its lowest ebb
in a year in December.7
Meanwhile, hybrid working has become the norm for
many, with 28% of Brits splitting their working weeks
between home and office in 2024,8 up from 24% in 2022.8
Conversely, there’s also been a rise in how many days

a week people are travelling to work. Workers in central
London spent an average of 2.7 days a week at the office
in 2024, up from 2.2 in 2023.9
All this is driving seismic, and at times surprising, shifts
in the foodservice landscape. For example, fast food is
growing as consumers rein in spend in more expensive
venues; workplace facilities are benefitting as employers
use food and drink to attract workers back into offices;
and foodservice outlets in leisure attractions are growing
as a result of an uptick in day tripping and foreign
tourist numbers.10
High street foodservice outlets accounted for 34.6%6 of the
eating out occasions that took place in the UK last year,
up from 33.3%6 in the previous year. City centre outlets
also saw an increase, from 18.6% to 18.9%.6 This is partly
a reflection of the growing numbers of people who are
travelling to towns and cities for work and pleasure.11
